Mixed Media Photo Collages
Codebreaker
A naked woman is writing in the moonlight, immersed in a mysterious atmosphere. Who is she and what is she doing at an old typewriter?
Is she a rebellious being, breaking the codes of a conservative society, expressing her wild creativity at night? Or is she perhaps a spy, breaking some secret code, as suggested by the mysterious language appearing on the background? As is often the case with Britta Dietsche’s photocollages, the title hinders the viewer’s ability to develop an unambiguous interpretation, opening up numerous very personal narratives.
Codebreaker includes some of the most effective strategies that Dietsche developed over the last years to produce surreal compositions. The dots and the geometrical forms actively interfere with the composition, deforming the surface of the image. The pawns, serially repeated and modified, suggest that the scene is taking place in a psychological space, penetrated by symbols of tension, suspense and strategic thoughts.
